Tuesday March 16, 2021 3:45pm Kara writes: “Mom’s vaccination is tomorrow at 3:45. Maria will take her and then she and Tom will head home on Thursday morning. I will leave for Arnold on Thursday morning. Mom’s follow-up appointment with her primary care doctor is on Monday at 11:00 in Murphys. I’ll take her to that and then I tentatively plan to leave for home on Monday afternoon. Maria says Mom has noticeably more energy today so that’s good news.”

Monday March 15, 2021 2:52pm Chris writes: I’ve been collecting schedules and this is what I have so far:

• Mom’s second COVID vaccine is Wednesday.

• Maria and Tom were planning to leave Arnold Wednesday, but may stay to take Mom to her vaccine or reschedule the vaccine on Friday, if possible.

• Kara is planning to take the hand off and arrive at Mom’s Thursday afternoon.

Let me know if you have anything to add.

Please give a warm internet welcome to the star of our blog – Mom!

Sunday March 15, 2021 4:52pm Mom writes: “HI, It is so wonderful to be home and Maria is so helpful. Very weak after a week on my back. Six inches of new snow this am. I laughed so hard while reading your readout of this adventure. Thanks for the humor! Love, Mom”

Sunday March 14, 2021 8:02pm Maria writes: “Pretty cute to watch Harley gather up the plate and clean up the scraps from moms dinner off her sweater. He and Lexi take good care of her. Makes me smile. She ate a small dinner tonight. I made her some fish, rice and spinach.

”She is sure frustrated being so weak.

“Lexi is going to pick up the mail for her for the next week. Harley said they would come by often. I’ll go down to angels camp and pick up her medication tomorrow. Kara will probably be here on Thursday.

“Also, if you can, let everyone know that mom absolutely loves the picture frame device that Kara sent to her. I set it up when we were here a month ago and mom watches it all the time. So any photos that we can load on it are great. Of course, Mikaela’s baby girls are her favorite but she loves them all.”

Sunday March 14, 2021 4:52pm Maria writes: “I was just writing to Darcy. If we need to stay through Wednesday to take her to the appointment we can do that without much trouble. If Kara can come on Thursday that would be great. Another thought is that we could try to change her appointment to Friday.”

Sunday March 14, 2021 4:24pm Chris writes: “Glad she enjoyed the blog. It was more fun to produce than gallstones. Looks like Maria and Tom need a hand off Wednesday. Snow sounds good. Who wants to go to the mountains?

Sunday March 14, 2021 1:33pm Maria writes: “She enjoyed it (the blog) immensely. However she is in pain when she laughs and she was hurting a lot. Right now she is sitting on her couch in front of the fire. Frustrated with the lack of strength. No appetite. But in good spirits otherwise.”

Sunday March 14, 2021 12:38pm Maria writes: “So as far as mom needing assistance after Wednesday, I will have a better idea tomorrow or Tuesday. Tom and I are planning to drive back on Wednesday morning. She is very weak and not eating much. I am going to do some housework for her today. Tom just took her garbage to the dump. I’ll do some more grocery shopping for her on Tuesday.

“We are expecting a decent snow storm tonight. Yay! Shoveling snow! Thank goodness we moved to Arizona. 😆😆.

“We haven’t heard what time her covid shot is in Wednesday. I’ll have to either stay in town to take her or arrange for someone to drive her. She is no where near ready to drive.

She wants to read the blog. Do you have any objections to me putting it on her computer?

If anyone wants to send a thank you note to nurse Pandora, Meghan, Jennifer, and the team on Floor 3:

Doctors Medical Center
1441 Florida Avenue
Modesto, CA 95350

We can only imagine the week they’ve had.

Saturday March 13, 2021 2:07pm Chris writes: “Every vacation has to end and Mom’s Holiday in Modesto is no exception. Maria and Tom have made the pick up. Mom is officially checked out and on her way home to Arnold by now. Somewhere on Floor 3 a confused surgeon is asking Nurse Meghan, “Where’s that gallbladder lady in 388?”

“Thank you everyone for being at-the-ready and patient throughout this ordeal. I think it tested our resources and revealed our strengths and what we need to work on if Mom stays in Arnold for the foreseeable future.

“Lastly, does anyone else wonder if this wasn’t just an elaborate ploy to get Maria back to Arnold?”

Saturday March 13, 2021 12:07pm Chris writes: “The hospital chapter of this adventure may be nearing an end. Mom called to ask if Craig may have been in an accident because he hadn’t arrived yet. I reminded her that she still hadn’t been released, so she put poor Nurse Meghan on the phone who “confirmed” that Mom was free to go. I pictured the nurse with a butter knife at her neck, but we’ll go with it.

“Maria and Tom have rerouted their trip to pick Mom up at around 2pm. Of course, Mom is happy about that and looks forward to civilian food. Craig, you can stand down.”

Saturday March 13, 2021 11:30am Chris writes: “No news from the hospital yet (but I may be cut out of Mom’s phone tree for insubordination). This means we may have switch to Plan M – Maria and Tom divert their trip to go through Modesto and pick up Mom around 4pm. This works if Mom is released, but who knows at this point.”

Saturday March 13, 2021 9:23am Chris writes: “Just got a voice message from Mom. She told Craig to hit the road because she’s been released… again. And again I called floor nurse Meghan (you may remember her from Monday’s report) who said Mom has not been released. Guess why not? If you guessed because she hasn’t seen the surgeon yet, you guessed right! Nurse Meghan says she doesn’t know when the surgeon will do her rounds, but it’ll take a while after to process all the patients before Meghan gets the release order. Then she needs ½ hour or so to finalize her part.

“A word of caution, don’t believe everything some people say.”

Saturday March 13, 2021 7:30am Chris writes: “Just got off the phone with Mom. We’re still waiting on the surgeon’s sign-off before she can be released. As of now the surgeon hasn’t visited. Mom will call one of us when she’s free and clear. No idea when that will be, but we expect sometime today.”

Saturday March 13, 2021 Michael Corleone says: “Every time I try to get out, they keep pulling me back in.”

Michael Corleone, Room 389

Friday March 12, 2021 6:36pm Chris writes: “Despite what Mom may have said, the hospital is not releasing her tonight. Apparently, the required surgeon visit and sign off didn’t happen today, so the discharge nurse cannot release her.

“Earlier Mom had attempted a jailbreak by buddying up to the guards and summoning Craig to idle the getaway car in the parking lot by the service ramp. She called me to put the caper in motion, but I put the kibosh on her plot when I called the discharge nurse to double check. “Who told you that? We don’t have the sign off from the surgeon, ” said Marlene in Admin, “And nobody leaves without the sign off from the surgeon!”

“I quickly hung up when I knew I’d been had.

“We’ll try again tomorrow. Craig is ready if it happens in the morning and Maria said she can loop around if she’s released in the afternoon.”

Friday March 12, 2021 3:33pm Chris writes: “Mom says her Nurse Pandora, a perpetually joyful 6’ 2” Black woman (think Leslie Jones), has been a shining light this week. Overall, everyone has been great and she raved about the attention from the hospital and her family. But as generous as everyone has been, Mom can’t get out until her surgeon signs off and we don’t know when that will be. Mom agreed to call the second she knows the schedule. Sorry Craig.

”Sidenote: She gets her second vaccine next Wednesday.”

Friday March 12, 2021 2:25pm Chris writes: “Just got off the phone with Mom’s nurse regarding her status. The surgeon has not visited Mom yet, so as of 2:30pm they can’t release her, regardless of what Mom tells you. The nurse was not sure when the surgeon will come by, but they “make the rounds” She repeated that she will call as soon as she knows more.

“Craig is waiting and ready to go when he gets the all-clear.”

March 12, 2021 12:01pm Bear Valley Cam: While we wait for news from the hospital, let’s have a look at the Bear Valley cam and weather forecast. Looks mostly clear through the weekend.

I vote to give Harley the day off.

UPDATE Friday March 12, 2021 11:06am Chris writes:“Maria has been on the phone with Mom. She confirms that Mom believes Craig is on the way. Call was interrupted by the doctor arriving. Stand by for an update soon.”

Friday March 12, 2021 11:04am Craig writes: “I was just looking at the webpage. Mom was with the understanding that I’d be picking her up at around 10:30. (Right now I’m picturing Mom trying to get out and some 8th grade boys are carrying her back in over their heads while she’s writhing and screaming.)

“Is Mom aware that I’m not on my way? I can call her but if someone has already let her know, I can save myself an hour on the phone.”

Friday March 12, 2021 10:35am Chris writes: “I got a mystery call, too. No message. I called the hospital and talked to her nurse who reported she still needs to see the surgeon. She has a drainage tube in her stomach,”

Friday March 12, 2021 10:15am Maria writes: ”I missed a couple of calls from Mom this morning. She left messages saying Craig was on his way and she is going home! I just tried calling her room but the line was busy.”

Friday March 12, 2021 8:29am Chris writes: “Just off the phone with Mom’s nurse and guess what? She has not been released nor is she ready to be released. That will require a visit by her doctor, her surgeon, and the hospital admin. Nurse said that process won’t start until at least noon today.

”Sidenote 1: She tested negative for COVID when she was admitted and the nurse said there have been no cases in that wing of the hospital.

”Sidenote 2: The nurse knew more about our personal lives than I felt comfortable, so Mom must be awake and talking.”

Friday March 12, 2021 7;55am Chris writes: “Sounds like she’s planning a breakout. Good to be cautious on this one. Mom had us concerned she would be released yesterday, but not true. I was told only the doctor can release her, so we’ll need that first.
I’ll call the nurse after they open at 8am and check. My questions:
-What is Mom’s status and when is she expected to be released?
-How long can she stay at the hospital until her ride arrives?
-What is the hospital COVID protocol? Can she be tested?
-What are her care instructions? Does she need medication or equipment?
-How soon before she can resume normal activities?
Anything else?
Chris
PS I tried texting craigsanders@icloud.com. Did you get it?”

Friday March 12, 2021 7;45am Craig writes:
“Mom just called and said I could come pick her up although she hasn’t been officially released. She’s just certain she will be. If you know the most accurate story, let me know.”

March 11, 2021 9:50pm Kara writes: “Mom update: She’s been back from the procedure for about an hour. Everything went well; they pulled a large gallstone and her bleeding wound seems to be diminishing a bit. She’s sure she will be discharged tomorrow, which she says is good because she can’t bear to think of the visual scars she’s leaving on the hospital staff. No modesty in a hospital. She’s exhausted and well-drugged so a good night’s sleep is on the schedule.”

Thursday March 11, 2021 6:41pm Chris reports: There was some confusion as to whether Mom was being released tonight. She may have just been optimistic. I called the hospital to get the status, but Mom’s nurse was helping a patient. I asked the other nurse to check on Mom just to let us know if she’ll be discharged soon. She said, “Sorry, no discharge tonight.”

If anyone else hears any different let us know.

March 11, 2021 1:17pm Kara reports: “From Mom: They just told her she has to fast from now until they can do a procedure via an esophageal tube to remove any gallstones that may have been left behind. This won’t happen until tomorrow so she is not leaving today for sure.”

Thursday March 11, 2021 1:01pm Kara reports: “I talked to Mom, who does not want to get off the phone, which is a good sign. One wound on her right hand side is continuing to bleed which they’re keeping an eye on. It must heal before she can be released, so it’s unlikely she’ll be out Thursday. I let Craig know to hold tight.

“Be aware Mom can’t the hear phone ringing, so if it’s important call the floor nurse at 209-576-3871

Thursday March 11, 2021 11:35am Kara writes: ““I tried calling Mom’s room (388). No answer. Do you know if she’s back in that room or if she’s on the neuro floor still? I didn’t speak to a nurse or doctor today. Craig hasn’t either. I tried again and still no answer so I’ll call and ask to speak to a nurse instead.”

Wednesday March 10, 2021 8:46pm Kara writes: “Craig confirmed that he can be there for her tomorrow but he doesn’t have a mobile phone so he won’t have a way to communicate until he’s in her room. Just something to keep in mind as we head into the next phase of this adventure.”

Wednesday March 10, 2021 6:41pm Chris writes: “Just got off the phone with Mom’s day nurse Jennifer. She’s on the Neuro Floor trauma in a private room sleeping now.

“This morning she got up to use restroom, but doctor noticed some bleeding around a tube entering her stomach, so they’re keeping an eye on that, but not concerned.  They checked hemoglobin for excess bleeding so she doesn’t loose blood. No need for ERCP to check for gall stones.

“Of course, she’s very weak and nauseated when eating, although she ate a little today. On liquid diet, no appetite, but needs to advance to regular diet before leaving. Currently resting. If all goes well, she may be released as soon as 3pm Thursday.

“Confirmed one person and one person only can visit. That means it should probably be the person who’s taking her home.”

Wednesday March 10, 2021 5:07pm Maria writes: “Just got news from Harley that the roads are not too bad and he went over after work today and shoveled moms driveway so whoever brings her home should be ok.”

Wednesday March 10, 2021 11:47am Kara says: “Mom is coherent, but not able keep food down. Gallbladder was mess, but it’s out. Mom probably won’t be released until Friday. Tentatively, Craig is coming, not B&J. Currently, only one designated person can visit, not one at a time.” Sorry Darcy.

Wednesday March 10, 2021 11:35am Maria writes: “Snow update. It is snowing down to Douglas Flat right now. That is below Murphys. Would B&J be willing to take her back to their house for a few days until the weather clears?”

Wednesday March 10, 2021 8:20am Brian writes: “Spoke to (nurse) Jennifer. There is no release time until the doctor makes his rounds. Today or tomorrow. He’s not there yet. She will call you if the release is today. I’ll go out and look at my chains.”

Wednesday March 10, 2021 8:05am Kara writes: “It looks like there’s a loose plan in place. If Mom gets out today Brian and Jackie will pick her up and stay with her until tomorrow morning. If she gets out tomorrow then Craig will pick her up. Either way, he can be with her from tomorrow until Saturday. Then Maria expects to be there on Saturday night. I can take over after her visit, presuming she has a need at that point.”

Wednesday, March 10, 2021 7:35am Maria sends photo: Snow in Arnold. Expected to continue throughout the day.

Forecast through Wednesday

Tuesday March 9, 2021 9:51pm Chris writes: “Just got off the phone with Nurse Dolores. Mom is out of surgery. It was a success (unless you’re a gallbladder). She is still groggy from anesthesia, so she can’t talk. In a few hours they’ll wake her and shuffle her around to make sure she’s ok. Tomorrow the hospital is changing their visitation policy to allow one designated visitor. (I vote Darcy because she knows the area.) Then she needs physical therapy and rehab. The surgery wasn’t invasive (unless you’re a gallbladder). Four small entry points covered with Bandaids. Nurse Dolores says she can go home “in a day or two”.

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 8:20pm Chris writes: “I just called the hospital and talked to nurse Dolores. She said Mom went in late so she’s still in surgery. When they’re done she need an hour post-op to wake up. At that time we can call her nurse Errol (a man). So, basically no news yet.”

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 2:46pm Jackie writes: “We’ll hang tight at home until the first surgery is complete this evening and see if another one is necessary in the morning. We’ll make the call when or if to leave tomorrow am.”

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 2:41pm Kara writes: “I just talked to Mom for 45 minutes. She’s in good spirits (albeit bored). She expects the main surgery shortly and then a smaller one tomorrow morning to sew things up if they’re unable to complete it today. According to her, Brian is the POC after surgery. My concern is that they won’t let her go home tomorrow if it ends up being a surgery day. We’ll see.”

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 1:35pm Maria writes: “Her nurse said she had the same surgery and was out the same day but she is about 60 years younger. Mom thinks tomorrow. They have to remove the gallbladder and connect the tube to the liver where the gallbladder is eliminated.”

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 10:28am Craig writes: “I had talked to Mom last night around 7:30. At the start of our conversation, she talked of going for a scan today and surgery would follow if needed. By the end of the conversation she was saying how she was not looking forward to surgery. She was starting to drift a little so I figured I’d follow up with Darcy to make sure I understood correctly. Mom was not as bright-side-of-things as she usually is. She was discouraged about how it seems to be a series of ailments as you get older.

“Although she was discouraged about the health issues, she was still very positive and cheery about her overall state of life (her environment, her neighbors, her family and friends, her home repairs). She’s most likely frustrated with having something going on that is taking her away from being home.”

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 10:15am Kara writes: “I presumed they had a definitive cause of her pain but it sounds like they’re still not sure. Darcy made it home at 5:30 this morning. She went to Mom’s first to drop off her stuff and feed cat. She said Craig is on standby if Brian can’t pick up Mom. I am also 6 hours from Modesto so I can be there too.”

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 10:08am  Jackie writes: “Sharon called Brian. Was frustrating on both sides because she can’t hear anything… Her feeling is that it’s something more serious than just gallbladder, but doesn’t have anything to back that up. She’s just waiting for the tests and we’re standing by. She has no entertainment, other than a tv that she won’t turn on. She’s able to go to the bathroom on her own. She feels like she’s the only one not getting information on herself. If anyone getting involved needs to know, she has a hide a key on her porch, in a magnetic case hooked to the underside of a metal table by the front door. There’s a big bag of cash that is first come, first serve. It’s located right on the…”

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 10:08am Damian writes: “Darcy just replied. She’s home safe. She arrived home at 5:30AM.” Darcy confirms: “Thanks!! I made it home at 5:30am. Easy, but long, drive. It never gets shorter.”

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 9:41am Maria writes: “Hi. Morning update: Mom just called. She is waiting to go into surgery. Says that if the exit was closer she would just get up and walk out because she feels fine. Since she doesn’t watch tv she is bored out of her mind. She is very critical of the person in charge of decorating the hospital room. Says the clock is halfway hidden behind the tv. The soap dispenser is hung on the mirror in the bathroom which makes no sense. Screws are in the wrong place. She’d like to show them how to rearrange. 😆

“She is counting on Brian to pick her up. When I told her she would probably be there until tomorrow she cringed. I don’t have any official word on a release but I can’t imagine they would release her today. I’ll ask Lexi to go over and check on Special Ed again today.”

Tuesday, March 9, 2021 7:36am Jackie writes: “Brian called the hospital and spoke to the nurse just now. Sharon’s going to have an emergency CT scan this morning sometime to see if the gallbladder needs to be removed. She’ll call Brian with status after the CT, because she has a feeling that Sharon won’t be released today.”

Monday March 8, 2021 4:39pm Chris writes: “Currently, Mom is coherent, but experiencing mild abdominal discomfort. I spoke to Dr. Joel (sp?) who reported they suspect Mom’s liver and gallbladder are causing the problem. They ran some tests and are concerned about the enzyme count which points to liver damage. They ran an ultra-sound, but fortunately did not find a mass (tumor). In the next few hours they will do an MRI on her belly. Gastro-Intestinal (GI) Dr. Abraham will review and get back to us this evening or tomorrow. If they find an obstruction she may need surgery, but Dr. Joel says it’s a small procedure. She may be in the MRI for a while, but after that she will stay overnight, but can take calls.”

Monday March 8, 2021 1:17pm Darcy writes: “They’re still waiting on her MRI and for her doctor to see her. She’s in good spirits and says she feels much better. The nurse said that her doctor should be in soon but she’s not certain how long before the MRI will take place, and that with all that is needed with that test, she’s not getting out today. Slightest chance they’ll say she can go later eve.”

Monday March 8, 2021 12:14pm Jackie writes: “We’ve been texting with Darcy. She’s hanging around right now waiting for the tests, and if confirmed she won’t be released until tomorrow, Brian and I will drive up and pick her up from the hospital tomorrow (if she’s released.) Brian has to be at work on Friday, so we can only be up there until Thursday.”

Monday March 8, 2021 11:14pm Maria writes to Darcy: “Just got off the phone with mom. She is just waiting for them to take her for the tests. I told her you were there because she seems to have thought you left. There is a guy in the next room screaming and it’s driving her nuts.

“I told her that you could stay until tomorrow and that there are other people who can take over if you have to leave before she gets released. They told her it was something to do with her gallbladder or liver possibly. She sounds really groggy, but she didn’t think that she sounded that way. I just got off the phone with the nurse and she has my number, too. She says she highly doubts she will be released today.

“So I would think tomorrow would be more likely. Mom seemed concerned about what she was going to do if she got released. I tried to explain Uber but she didn’t grasp it. 😜. Just kidding. I told her we would figure out who would be there if you had to leave. So between Brian, Harley, Parker and Sonja we will have it covered.”

Monday March 8, 2021 12:20am Darcy and Mom arrive at hospital in Modesto.

March 8, 2021 8:41am Chris writes: “Mom’s attending nurse said she is currently sleeping. Lab test (almost) rules out cardiac arrest (heart attack), but she has stomach pain.
“She is scheduled for an MRI and an ultrasound later today.
She is in Room 388, 209-576-3871
Her nurse is Meghan #3871 until 5pm
No visitors due to COVID protocol.”

Monday, March 8, 2021 7:30am after sleeping in her car, Darcy writes: “I just called the ER, says to call back around 7:30-8am. Here’s the number: 209-576-3883”

Monday, March 8, 2021 1:12am Darcy writes: “Let me see where this is gonna go. I might just lock myself in my car and nod off until they call me. I like being close.”

Monday, March 8, 2021 1:08am Darcy writes: “The nurse just called to ask what she’s been experiencing so I filled her in. They’re taking her vitals now.”

Monday, March 8, 2021 1:02am Darcy writes: “Ok, just arrived. She’s getting checked in. I’m not allowed in yet so she has to do all this on her own which really stinks. She’s feeling awful. And her outfit really leaves something to be desired…”

Monday March 8, 2021 12:20am Darcy and Mom arrive at hospital in Modesto.

Sunday, March 7, 2021 11:51pm: Plan has changed. Mom is in serious pain and not sure what is the problem. Darcy is driving her to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto an hour and a half from Arnold (Mom’s choice).

Sunday, March 7, 2021 Darcy writes: “I drove to her this evening and am here now for the night and most of tomorrow. She seems fine, exhausted but fine. I told her we’d assess her situation in the morning and get advice from all y’all about whether she should go to the doctor.”

Sunday, March 7, 2021 Darcy writes: “Ok, quick update. I called mom this afternoon to let her know I was thinking about swinging by her house to deliver the chainsaw she seems to really need and she thought I was Maria at first. She sounded awful and said she’d had a rough night. Turns out, self diagnosed, she had another heart attack last night.”

Mom had mid-to-lower back pain last Saturday night. Fortunately, Darcy was heading to Arnold to visit and drop off a chain saw. She arrived Sunday to find Mom had a miserable night, so they decided to rush to the hospital in Modesto (Mom’s choice).
