My Sidewalk Vendor Permit Adventure
Naturally, sidewalk vending pre-dates brick-and-mortar businesses for obvious reasons. The first time a passing traveler traded a goat for wine, it probably happened on a sidewalk. Although the transaction seemed unencumbered by regulations and rules, building inspectors, landlords, neighbors, etc. we somehow lost sight of the simple elegance and here we are today.

We updated the email servers for bevsanders.com. I was worried that any return email wouldn’t make it into Bev’s Inbox, but I could find any stray emails from the City.
They did respond with a web portal and account so we could track our progress:
“Hi Chris Sanders,
A new City of Carmel by the Sea account has been created for you. Click the url below to activate your account and select a password!

If the above URL does not work try copying and pasting it into your browser. If you continue to have problems, please feel free to contact us.

I set up the account, but couldn’t find any record of the application.

Hello Ms. Aubuchon,
I’m interested in applying for a Carmel sidewalk vending permit and have a couple questions.
1. Will any permits become available this year?
2. If not, how far down the wait list will I be?
Thank you for your attention,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Thirteen sidewalk vending permits will be made available beginning March 1, 2021. Existing permit holders maintain the right to renew their permits, however, a waiting list will be maintained for new applicants based on the order in which their application has been received and deemed complete. Should existing permit holders choose not to renew their permit by March 1, new licenses will be issued in the order in which the application is received and deemed complete, or based on the order of the waitlist. It is currently unknown how many permit holders will choose to renew, but if you would like to be placed on the waitlist should permits be available, please submit a completed sidewalk vending application (attached) to planning@ci.carmel.ca.us. At the time of this email, you would be #1 on the waitlist should a complete application be submitted (subject to change).
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
Evan Kort
